The National Center for Water Quality Research (NCWQR) of Heidelberg University seeks a highly motivated scientist with experience relating watershed export studies to human land use, including nutrient dynamics in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. The new staff member will be an integral member of the NCWQR and will collaborate with other personnel on multiple ongoing NCWQR projects. An initial focus will be to assist in the data analysis and project management of a 4R nutrient stewardship grant examining how 4R practices may reduce nutrient export and influence stream metabolism. The staff member will also help manage a new paired watershed study examining the effectiveness of agricultural BMPs on nutrient runoff. Approximately 70% of the research scientist’s time initially will be devoted to these two grants.
The remainder of the individual’s time, and 100% of their time after completion of the above grants, will be devoted to other programs and projects of the NCWQR that are funded through a variety of sources. Activities will include:
- Become familiar with and participate as needed in all aspects of the Heidelberg Tributary Loading Program, including data analysis, report generation, and developing funding to sustain and grow the program.
- Envision, initiate, write and submit external grant proposals for the purpose of funding existing and new research and monitoring projects and programs aligned with the mission of the NCWQR; contribute as a co-investigator on proposals of other NCWQR staff members
- Participate in and/or lead interdisciplinary and inter-university research studies addressing land-use/water-quality issues both within watersheds and in the Great Lakes and Mississippi River basins.
- Participate in deliberations of agricultural and environmental groups at local, state, national and binational levels as deemed appropriate to advance the programs of the NCWQR and disseminate to diverse audiences, via PowerPoint presentations, fact sheets and other means, information resulting from the Center’s projects and programs. Also collaborate with local, state, and federal agencies as well as industries, watershed organizations, and environmental groups in their water resource management programs.
- Publish the results of NCWQR research and monitoring studies in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience and qualifications, including:
- Completion of a PhD in the Natural Sciences, Engineering, or a related field. Postdoctoral research experience is preferred
- Experience in writing and publishing scientific articles
- Experience writing proposals seeking external funding, preferably with multidisciplinary collaborators
- Presentation experience to both scientific and lay audiences
- Experience in statistical approaches to examining long-term and high frequency data sets is preferred
